Having Fun With Magic

THIS IS NOT A MAGIC TUTORIAL. More of a fun story I would like to share with you about the practical uses of magic.

I don't know if you the reader have ever seen me to the trick where I "cough" or "throw up" cards out of my mouth. If you haven't seen it, it's pretty funny looking. So I went to the doctors office and I was playing with a deck of cards. When I practice in public people always give me weird stares wondering what in the world I'm doing.

When I get to the examining room the nurse asks me what is wrong. Suddenly a light bulb appeared over my head. I told her that I wasn't feeling well and then I started making funny body movements as if I was about to throw up on the spot. She started to look a little bit nervous...... but that was nothing compared to the look on her face when I threw up about 20 cards out of my mouth. It made me want to visit every Kaiser in California and do this. Even my mom could not keep a straight face.

I guess this makes me the weirdest magician in Santa Rosa. Well give me a call if you would like to discuss some fun ways to use magic in your everyday life. (707) 679-8158. See ya next time.

The Magic Shops Are Dead! Long Live eBay!

People ask me all the time where they can buy magic supplies. It didn't use to be like this. Back when the Mostly Magic Shop supplied all of Santa Rosa's magicians with their needed tricky gear. But ever since the magic shop closed, a lot of people don't realize that there tons of online magic stores with even better prices than the original magic shops had. Although make sure to buy from a shop that is trustworthy.

You can download magic tricks from Magic For All. Magic For All provide magic tutorials, free tricks to download and the best instant download magic tricks. Good Luck!

A mathemagical card trick

For all of you who love mathematical card tricks, this is it. If you present in the right manner it is a show stopper. I learned this from my friend and Santa Rosa magician Ken Garr. But this trick is form Scarne's Magic Tricks. It's a great book for beginners and professionals alike. So without further ado YOUTUBE LINK

Great books for new magicians

Hey it's Julian here. For those of you who are just getting into magic I've got a few book recommendations for you:

-Now you see it, now you don't by Bil Tarr: This was my first ever magic book. It contains lessons in basic sleight of hand and teaches you everything you need to know to jump right into the world of magic. I still reference that book from time to time.

-101 Easy-To-Do Magic Tricks by Bill Tarr: Another one of my first books on magic. This is the perfect book if you are trying to put together a stand up magic show. You could perform for hours with all the great tricks in this book.

Also for you card magicians who are just starting out, check out Easy To Master Card Miracles by Michael Ammar (Google it). Each DVD is about $30 but they are all jam packed with some of the best effects in card magic. You use to be able to get all this stuff at the Santa Rosa Magic Shop but sadly it has closed. So my next advice is eBay.com.

Until next time,

Julian

The Amazing Restored Sting In Straw

I grew up in a city called Santa Rosa. I used to perform magic for random people at the mall. Now I wasn't always good at sleight of hand. Just like everyone else I had to start small. The trick you are about to learn from this video was one of the first ten tricks in my repertoire. It's nice because all you need is a straw and a piece of yarn (not very hard to find). Oh and let's not forget about the scissors. Here's the video!

The secret to becoming a great performer

Remember that if a trick doesn't go well for you the first time, IT DOES NOT MATTER! Don't give up. Every magician needs a certain amount of time spent performing before they can become comfortable and smooth with their magic. The first time you get up to perform you aren't going to act like a seasoned pro. I used to do close up magic at the Santa Rosa farmer's market. The experience taught me many valuable lessons about performing. So the point is perform as much as possible and you can only get better and better.

Rubber band magic

Rubber band magic. I love rubber bands because they are always available. These are good tricks to perform at school or work or anywhere else where you see a rubber band on someone's desk. Magic is much more magical when it's done with someone else's props instead of yours. Chances are that if you are reading this you are becoming a new Sonoma County magician. Keep it up and follow your dreams no matter what.
How To Gauge Your Ear In Ten Seconds

Would you like a little something to spice up your social AND business life? In this blog I will teach a cool new trick every week that you can use to impress your friends or a business associate. If you are meeting with a client wouldn't it be fun to magically produce your business card out of thin air (I'll be teaching that one next week). Imagine you are at a restaurant and you make the salt shaker disappear into thin air. As a Sonoma County magician I have made lots of new friends, received higher tips at an old job, and created many business opportunities just from doing random magic. So can you.

For the first blog entry I am teaching my favorite trick that requires NO SKILL AND NO PROPS. Now I don't do this one as children's birthday entertainment. However it's a good one to mess with your friends. "How To Gauge Your Ear In Ten Seconds". The YouTube.com link is at the bottom. Watch the video and practice it a few times before testing it on your friends. This is the perfect addition to your street magic.

Suggested uses and tips:

1. Next time your at the mall in Sonoma County (or any other mall) stop by the piercing booth and show them your new method for gauging ears.

2. Jeff McBride likes to call it his "African Tribal Piercing".

3. There are a lot of people in the Bay Area with gauge piercings. They all like this trick because it applies to them. But if you live outside of the Bay Area I'm not sure how many people this trick will apply to. Your welcome to come up with your won ideas on presenting the trick.

HAVE FUN!!!! See you next week. If you are ever in Sonoma County give me a call at (707) 679-8158 and we can discuss more tricky ideas!
